Join Look@NYArt for a curated 90-minute Financial District Sculpture Stroll, focused on iconic Modern and Contemporary public sculptures. Often massive in scale and installed from 1964 to 2024, these public works are by renowned artists including Louise Nevelson, Jean Dubuffet, Isamu Noguchi, Frank Stella, and others.
You will learn about the factors that made the 1960s and 1970s pivotal decades for the installation of a new type of public art. You will learn about each work and how it fits into each artist's practice. You will also learn fascinating stories behind each sculpture. The stunning Jean Dubuffet Group of Four Trees (1972) stands where an Alessandro Giacometti was meant to be! We will discuss how Mark di Suvero's Joie de Vivre (1998) was often the backdrop for the Occupy Wall Street protests of 2011. We will rediscover Fritz Koenig’s The Sphere (1972), the sculpture which stood afoot the twin towers and survived 9/11. We will discuss Tilted Arc, a Richard Serra sculpture which was removed after commuters found it obtrusive and fought for its removal.
Capped at 25 attendees. Additional fee of $40 per applies. Learn more about Look@NYArt and your guide at https://lookatnyart.com.
